Abstract

This chapter describes the procedures of lumbar puncture (spinal tap), cisternal puncture, intravenous therapy, parenteral hyperalimentation, pleural fluid aspiration (thoracentesis), pneumothorax aspiration, pericardiocentesis, abdominal paracentesis (ascitic tapping), endotracheal intubation, tracheostomy, bronchoscopy, oxygen therapy, bone marrow examination, nasogastric intubation, gastric analysis, glucose tolerance test, transvenous pacing, cardioversion of atrial fibrillation, pleural biopsy, liver biopsy, renal biopsy (kidney biopsy), urinary bladder catheterization, and enema. Lumbar puncture (LP) is indicated for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Lumbar puncture should be done only after proper clinical examination and evaluation of its benefits and hazards. Cisternal puncture is carried out for diagnostic purposes to collect CSF for examination when LP is not possible due to severe deformity, local infective pathology or traumatic tap. Thoracentesis is a procedure to aspirate pleural fluid by puncturing the chest wall. Pericardiocentesis is a potentially risky procedure. It should ideally be performed under ultrasonography guidance with ECG monitoring.
