The objective of this chapter is to introduce the glands. A gland is an organ which produces and releases substances that perform a specific function in the body. Types of glands are exocrine gland and endocrine gland. Endocrine glands are glands of the endocrine system that secrete their products, hormones, directly into the blood rather than through a duct. Exocrine glands pour their secretion through ducts. Endocrine glands pour their secretion directly into blood (capillaries). Glands which are based on shape of secretory unit, based on number of ducts, based on secretory mechanism, and based on nature of secretions are also discussed in this chapter. Clinical images are also provided in the chapter.
