Abstract

Occupational therapy as a profession concerned with promoting health and well-being through occupation. Occupational therapists use careful analysis of physical, environmental, psychosocial, mental, spiritual, political and cultural factors to identify barriers to occupation. The primary goal of an occupational therapist is to enable individuals, groups and communities to participate in activities, which are meaningful to them, reflect their beliefs and values, and produce a sense of accomplishment or satisfaction. This chapter covers the occupation, occupational form, occupational performance, physical health, mental health, community-based practice, occupational therapy approaches, activity analysis, theoretical frameworks, challenges for occupational therapy, and occupational therapy and ICF. Activity analysis has been defined as a process of dissecting an activity into its component parts and task sequence in order to identify its inherent properties and the skills required for its performance, thus allowing the therapist to evaluate its therapeutic prospective.
