Abstract

The objective of this chapter is to focus on the imaging in polyps and mucoceles. Polyps are inflammatory, expansile masses of the sinonasal cavity. They are the most common nasal cavity masses with frequent involvement of the ethmoid sinuses. Two forms of polyps are nasal polyps and choanal polyps. Nasal polyps (sinonasal polyposis) are bilateral disease with the involvement of nasal cavity and/or sinuses. Choanal polyps are solitary, benign sinonasal masses which originate in a paranasal sinus and enter into the nasal cavity. These are typically unilateral and occur in young patients. Retention cyst (RC) may result from obstruction of serous or mucinous glands following inflammation. The contents may hence be predominantly serous or mucinous. Pneumatization of the sinuses is variable and occasionally large air-filled sinuses may be seen. This condition has been most frequently described for frontal sinus. While it may be a normal variant, it may also result from ball valve mechanism (partial obstruction of frontal sinus drainage pathway due to mucosal edema), or even following the spontaneous drainage of a mucocele.
