Abstract

Asymptomatic bacteriuria can be defined as isolation of a specified quantitative count of bacteria in an appropriately collected urine specimen (freshly voided midstream urine) from an individual without any symptoms or signs of urinary tract infection. Asymptomatic bacteriuria is common and its prevalence in population varies with age, sex, sexual activity, presence of genitourinary abnormalities and comorbidities. It is more common in women with the incidence increasing with advancing age. Asymptomatic bacteriuria is a microbiologic diagnosis determined with a urine specimen that has been collected in a manner to minimize contamination and transported to the laboratory in a timely fashion to limit bacterial growth. Treatment of asymptomatic bacteriuric patients is a common clinical dilemma. Antibiotics have shown improved patient outcomes in few very select scenarios. Apart from those, routine use of antimicrobials in patients with asymptomatic bacteriuria is to be discouraged.
