Abstract

Introduction of a research paper offers a brief overview about the topic of research, the rationale of the research work and the context, a brief explanation about the research questions and hypothesis. A well-written introduction should be able to attract the reader’s interest, encouraging the reader to go through the entire article and critically analyze the content of the article. It should be according to the IMRAD (introduction, methods, results and discussion) structure. Introduction of a research paper should tell the reader about the topic of research, about the context of research, about the rationale of the research work, and about the research question and hypothesis. The chapter also elaborates that a brief and focused research question is mentioned towards the end of the introduction and is to be developed based on the FINER (feasible, interesting, novel, ethical and relevant) criteria. Limitations of a research paper, if any, are to be mentioned in the introduction itself. Tips for writing a good introduction are also listed along with few examples.
