Abstract

The urinary system consists of kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra. Etiology, clinical manifestations, diagnosis and management of urinary tract infections, acute pyelonephritis, chronic pyelonephritis, glomerulonephritis, acute poststreptococcal glomerulonephritis, nephrotic syndrome, renal calculi (urolithiasis), bladder trauma, and cancer of the bladder are discussed. Preoperative considerations, operative incisions, immediate postoperative care, management of drainage tubes nephrostomy drainage, postoperative care, and patient education and home care for a patient undergoing renal surgery are listed lucidly. Renal failure is the partial or complete impairment of kidney function resulting in an inability to excrete metabolic waste products and water, as well as causing functional disturbances of all body systems. Chronic kidney disease is a progressive, irreversible loss of kidney function in which the body is unable to maintain metabolic fluid and electrolyte balance. The chapter also describes concepts related to dialysis, hemodialysis, kidney transplantation, assessment of male reproductive system, cystoscopy, penile cancer, testicular cancer, benign prostatic hyperplasia, cancer of the prostate, and prostatitis.
