Abstract

The aim of this chapter is to focus on the nursing management of elderly. Population aging is one of the most important trends of the 21st century. One in eight people in the world are aged 60 or over. As long as fertility rates continue to drop and life expectancy continues to rise, older people will steadily increase as a proportion of the population. In humans, aging denotes the accumulation of changes in a human being over time. This chapter covers an aging world, conditions associated with aging, home and institutional care, and legal aspects. Advance directive is a document by which a person makes provision for health care decisions in the event that, in the future, he/she becomes unable to make those decisions. The two most common types of advance directives are the living will and the durable power of attorney for health care.
