Abstract

Disorders of the digestive tract can threaten the patient’s nutritional status leading to disorders in the structure and functioning of other body systems. Nurses have a major role to educate the patients how to promote normal functioning of the gastrointestinal (GI) system and detect problems early. The nurse begins by taking a complete history focusing on symptoms common to GI dysfunction. Endoscopic ultrasonography is a specialized enteroscopic procedure that aids in the diagnosis of GI disorders by providing direct imaging of a target area. Nurse’s responsibilities in case of various diagnostic procedures are detailed upon. Etiology, pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, medical-surgical management and nursing management based on nursing process approach of various GI disorders are explained in this chapter.
