Personality of an individual can be viewed in many aspects as—one’s values, interests, attitudes and beliefs, behavior and sometimes as physical appearance also. The chapter is based on the concept of personality disorders, which are deeply ingrained maladaptive behavior pattern characterized by difficulty to form enduring personal relationships and social functioning, that begin in the teenage years or young adulthood. Some of the types of personality disorders like specific personality disorders, paranoid personality disorder, schizoid personality disorder, etc. are also described in this chapter. People with personality disorders come to hospital with the problems like anxiety, depression, adjustment problems or family problems. Nurse should establish a trusting relationship by empathizing with them through active listening, observations and identification of their personal feelings. She should passively observe for any signs of aggression—facial expressions, grinding the teeth, clenching of fist, loud speech, shouting, use of abusive words and destructive activities and intervene before escalation of behavior.
