Abstract

The chapter talks about the behavioral syndromes associated with physiological disturbances and physical factors like eating disorders, sleep disorders and sexual disorders. Disturbances in the eating, sleep and sexual functions are encountered in clients with various mental as well as medical disorders. Awareness regarding the management of these disturbances is vital when rendering care to these clients. Anorexia nervosa is a syndrome characterized by fear of gaining weight and significant body image disturbance which is treated with antidepressants, antipsychotics, and psychotherapy. Bulimia nervosa is characterized by recurrent episodes of binge eating followed by compensatory behaviors. Sleep disorder are abnormalities in the amount, quality, or timing of sleep and abnormal behavioral and physiological events occurring in association with sleep, specific sleep stages, or sleep-wake transitions. International classification of sleep disorders (ICSD) classified sleep disorders into dyssomnia and parasomnia. Sexual dysfunction consists of an impairment or disturbance in any of the phases of the sexual response cycle. Paraphilia is characterized by the presence of sexual arousal in response to non-human object, which are not a part of normal sexual arousal.
