Community psychiatry is defined as the provision of mental health services to the patient within their community environment with a goal to achieve full social integration. Community mental health includes services like promotion of mental health, prevention of mental health problems, treatment and rehabilitation of psychiatric patients in the community. Community mental health nursing is defined as the application of knowledge of psychiatric nursing in implementing, promoting and maintaining mental health of the people, to help in early diagnosis and care and to rehabilitate clients after mental illness. Psychiatric rehabilitation refers to a goal directed and time limited process aimed at helping an impaired person to reach the optimum mental, psychical and/or social function level. The nurses’ role in psychiatric rehabilitation includes assessment by nurse about the interest, abilities, interpersonal skills and limitations about the patient. Community mental health services includes community mental health center, partial hospitalization, halfway houses, etc. National Mental Health Programme was launched by Government of India in 1982 to ensure the availability and accessibility of minimum mental health care for all particularly to the most vulnerable and underprivileged sections of the population.
