Abstract

Psychiatry is a branch of medicine which deals with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mental disorders. Hippocrates, father of medicine explained that mental disorders were caused by the imbalance of bodily humors. History of psychiatry at the international level can be categorized into 5 periods, namely period of persecution, period of segregation, humanitarian period, period of scientific attitude, and period of prevention. History of psychiatry in India can be categorized into 4 periods such as precolonial period, colonial period, mid-colonial period, and postindependence period. Psychiatric-mental health nursing evolved as a specialty to provide treatment for the mentally ill. Other topics discussed are development of psychiatric nursing in India, challenges in psychiatric nursing, trends in psychiatric nursing, National Mental Health Programme, and District Mental Health Programme, amongst others.
