The chapter deals with the assessment of mental health of a patient. The basic techniques of mental health assessment include psychiatric history, mental status examination, mini mental status examination, medical investigation, and psychological tests. A complete physical examination with system wise assessment and special emphasis on neurological assessment is mandatory. Psychiatric history collection is a nondirective interview which helps in rapport building. Interview questions can be closed questions, open ended questions or neutral one. But in psychiatric assessments open ended questions will be useful in exploring thoughts and feelings, to change topic and to assess attitudes. This will help in getting descriptive answers.
