Abstract

The objective of this chapter is to introduce the antiparkinson drugs. Antiparkinson medication is a type of drug which is intended to treat and relieve the symptoms of Parkinson\'s disease. Most of these agents act by either increasing dopamine activity or reducing acetylcholine activity in the central nervous system. This chapter covers the levodopa, trihexyphenidyl hydrochloride, cabergoline, tetrabenazine, ropinirole, pramipexole, and selegiline along with their indication, dose, contraindication, precaution, adverse effect, and drug interaction. Prophylaxis of drug-induced extrapyramidal symptoms and idiopathic Parkinsonism are the indications of trihexyphenidyl hydrochloride. Patients with closed angle glaucoma, chronic pulmonary disease, sick sinus syndrome, thyrotoxicosis, and cardiac failure with tachycardia are the contraindications of trihexyphenidyl hydrochloride.
