Abstract

Opioid analgesics exert their pharmacologic effects by binding to specific receptors both within and outside the central nervous system. This chapter covers the naloxone, pentazocine, morphine, and fentanyl along with their indication, dose, contraindication, precaution, adverse effect, and drug interaction. Opioid dependence, reversal of central depression from opioid use during surgery, and opioid overdosage are the indications of naloxone. Severe pain (acute and chronic), myocardial infarction (MI), acute pulmonary edema, and adjunct during major surgery and postoperative analgesia are the indications of morphine. Cancer pain and adjunct to general anesthesia patients are the indications of fentanyl.
