Abstract

This chapter describes the procedure of percutaneous mitral valvotomy. Percutaneous mitral valvotomy (PMV) is usually done as an inpatient procedure. Since, there is always a chance of mitral valve replacement (MVR) or surgical intervention being needed due to complications related to septal puncture, surgical standby is usually arranged for. This chapter covers the preparation of the patient (SCTIMST protocol), obtaining the vascular access, preparation of the septal puncture system and the balloon, and steps of percutaneous mitral valvotomy.
