Abstract

Rheumatic mitral stenosis (MS) continues to be endemic in developing countries where it is the most frequent valve disease. Although, the prevalence of rheumatic fever has greatly decreased in western countries, it continues to represent an important clinical entity because of immigration from developing countries. The two major techniques for percutaneous mitral valvuloplasty (PMV) are the double balloon technique (DBT) and the Inoue balloon technique (IBT). The multitrack balloon was introduced as a variant of the DBT that aims at making the procedure easier, as it requires the presence of a single guide wire only. Cribier et al. introduced the metallic commissurotome (MC), which uses a device similar to the Tubb’s dilator used during closed surgical mitral commissurotomy.
