Abstract

This chapter discusses mitral valvotomy by metallic commissurotome. Percutaneous mitral valvotomy (PMV) is the treatment of choice for mitral stenosis, but the cost of the procedure remains a limitation in countries with restricted financial resources, leading to frequent reuse of disposable catheters. To overcome this limitation, a reusable metallic commissurotomy device was developed by Alain Cribier et al. with the goals of both improving the mitral commissurotomy results and decreasing the cost of the procedure. This chapter covers the description of the device, mechanism of valvotomy with metallic commissurotome, technique, technical considerations, complications, and initial and long-term results.
