Abstract

Percutaneous mitral valvotomy (PMV) is established as an effective treatment for mitral stenosis (MS) and is now the procedure of choice. There are different gadgets which are developed and now available for performing percutaneous mitral valvotomy. However, the cost of the procedure, which results principally from the cost of the balloon catheter used, still remains a limitation to its application in developing countries with limited financial resources, which are, incidentally, those countries with the highest incidence of MS. The methods of resterilization available for the hardware used for PMV are ethylene oxide (EtO) sterilization and glutaraldehyde (CIDEX) sterilization briefly explained in this chapter.
