Abstract

The aim of management of mitral stenosis (MS) is to control symptoms and to prevent the complications of mitral stenosis. The major complications of mitral stenosis are acute pulmonary edema, pulmonary hypertension, systemic thromboembolism and right heart failure. The management should also aim to prevent progression of the valve lesions, by preventing recurrences of rheumatic fever. This chapter covers the physical examination, murmur of mitral stenosis, echocardiography and radiological evaluation, diuretics, rheumatic fever prophylaxis, infective endocarditis prophylaxis, anticoagulation, diagnostic testing in MS-cardiac catheterization, and mixed valve lesions.
