Traction means action of pulling something over a surface. Types of traction are skin traction and skeletal traction. Skin traction is applied over skin and indirectly applies pulling force to bone. Weight can be 5–7 pounds attached to skin, e.g. Buck’s traction, Hamilton Russel’s traction, Gallow’s traction. Skeletal traction is applied to the bone, an invasive procedure with tongs, pin and screws. Nursing care of patient with traction, orthoses, orthopedic cast, complications of traction and cast are also discussed in this chapter.
