Abstract

This chapter describes an approach to the management of aphasia. Aphasia is defined as a disorder of language that is acquired secondary to brain damage. An understanding of language disorders requires review of various anatomical, linguistic components. Language disorders have a clear neuroanatomical basis, however the recovery pattern that have been observed in disorders are different. Aphasia can be considered unidimensional in nature and share similarities in behavioral impairment and differ only in severity. Based on literature reviews of studies, approach to speech rehabilitation can be categorized into eight methods following as stimulation–facilitation approach, modality model approach, processing approach, nondominant hemisphere approach, linguistic approach, functional communication approach, life participation approach, and biological approach.
