Abstract

Myelopathy is a broad term indicating spinal cord involvement due to multiple causes. The term myelopathy describes pathologic conditions that cause spinal cord, meningeal or perimeningeal space damage or dysfunction. Traumatic injuries, vascular diseases, infections and inflammatory or autoimmune processes may affect the spinal cord. The clinical symptomatology depends on the level of the lesion in the spinal cord, the longitudinal extent of the lesion (number of contiguous segments involved), the extent in the transverse plane and the temporal course of the disease. Neuroimaging (MRI) plays a crucial role in the diagnosis of any myelopathy. Besides identifying compression it also helps in identification of noncompressive lesions like demyelination and its anatomic extent.
