Abstract

The chapter focuses on the surgical or invasive scar revision techniques. Scarring is an inevitable mark following healing of a wound or burn. Any wound that penetrates deeper than the epidermis, inflicted by biologic, chemical, or physical injury, results in healing by scar formation. Scar revision surgery refers to different types of procedures that are done to partially remove scar tissue, or to make the scar(s) less noticeable. The selection of procedure that is performed depends on the type of scar, its cause, location, and size; and the characteristics of the patient’s skin. General technical considerations for scar revision, types of scar revision techniques (Fusiform elliptical excision, serial excision, Z-plasty, W plasty, M-plasty, geometric broken-line closure, V-Y plasty, Y-V plasty) and complications of scar revision along with tips for prevention are discussed in this chapter.
