Abstract

This chapter describes some of the basic concepts of flap surgery for budding dermatosurgeons. A flap surgery consists of reconstruction of a surgically created defect with skin and subcutaneous tissue. Flap is a unit of tissue that is transferred from one site (donor site) to another (recipient site) while maintaining its own blood supply. Classification of flap surgeries, basic steps of flap surgery, rotational flap, advancement flap, rhombic flap, and complications are described in this chapter. Ample photographic representations of flap surgery techniques are given for better grasp of the concept. Definitions of primary defect, secondary defect, tension vector, and pivot point are mentioned.
