Abstract

Nerve biopsy is an invasive procedure in which a nerve is sectioned either partially or fully to diagnose potentially treatable causes of neuropathy. The histopathological evaluation of a nerve biopsy specimen is often the final and important step in the diagnostic work-up while evaluating a case of neuropathy of unknown origin. A nerve biopsy is advocated when there is progressive neuropathy, threatens to become debilitating, and other noninvasive tests fail to identify a cause. It is commonly performed on a pure cutaneous nerve like sural nerve or radial cutaneous nerve. Biopsy of mixed or motor nerve is done very rarely in special circumstances. The chapter talks about the selection of biopsy site, biopsy sample handling, complications, sural nerve biopsy and distal superficial radial nerve biopsy.
