Abstract

The chapter aims to focus on the suture materials and the different suturing techniques for wound closure. Cutaneous surgery for different indications has become the most commonly performed surgical procedure across all specialties. Appropriate choice of the surgical technique and closure material will help in delivering esthetically appealing scars to the patients. The choice is based on wound characteristics like size, location, wound tension and type of repair. Depending upon the technique, different suturing methods can be categorized into interrupted sutures, continuous or running sutures and other special sutures. Proper suturing technique will result in well-approximated and everted wound margins. Buried suture is generally one size larger than the epidermal suture. Appropriate timing and technique of suture removal is important to avoid suture marks, infection and wound gaping. Immediate complications which arise after the suturing of wound edges are also given in the chapter. Other means of wound closure include skin tapes, surgical adhesive and staples.
