Abstract

Sclerotherapy is a well-known technique that involves targeted eradication of varicose veins, small vessels, and vascular anomalies by injecting a sclerosant into them. It is used for treatment of telangiectasias, varicose veins, symptomatic hemangiomas, low-flow vascular malformations, and benign vascular tumors. Comparison of various sclerosing agents like sodium tetradecyl sulphate, polidocanol, sodium morrhuate, hypertonic saline, chromated glycerine, etc. is given in a tabulated format. Various techniques are used to inject a sclerosant basically depending on the size of the vein to be treated. Special techniques of sclerotherapy like sclerotherapy guided by duplex ultrasonography and foam sclerotherapy are also described in brief. This procedure is particularly effective for early and smaller varicosities, since it also may help in preventing the development of skin changes and is also the method preferred for residual varicosities after a varicose vein surgery.
