Abstract

Cryotherapy, also known as cryosurgery, is a commonly used in-office procedure for the treatment of a variety of benign and malignant lesions. The general advantages of cryotherapy are its ease of use, low cost and good cosmetic results. The mechanism of action in cryotherapy can be divided into 3 phases—heat transfer, cell injury and inflammation. The chapter covers cryosurgery equipment; cryotherapy protocol; treatment modalities using cryotherapy including spray freeze technique, the dipstick applicator technique, forceps technique, and the cryoprobe method; innovation in cryotherapy like use of microdermabrasion tips as a substitute for specula, targeted cryotherapy, modification in the treatment of pedunculated lesions; complications; contraindications; and various case handling.
