Abstract

Botulinum toxin (BTX) is a powerful neurotoxin produced by gram-positive anaerobic bacterium clostridium botulinum. The therapeutic efficacy of BTX was first seen with marked improvement of 67 patients with strabismus. BTX-A is most commonly used toxin. The vial available is a 100 or 50 unit freeze dried powder which contains purified clostridium botulinum toxin type A neurotoxin complex (BTX-A). BTX in dermatology has been available for more than three decades for cosmetic and noncosmetic indications. Wrinkle reduction and rejuvenation are the cosmetic indications while facial spasms, other spastic conditions, calf hypertrophy, migraine, dystonias, dysphonias, hyperhidrosis are some of noncosmetic ones. Clinical application of BTX in dermatology, contraindications for BTX treatment, BTX in palmar hyperhidrosis, BTX in scars, etc. are discussed in this chapter.
