Abstract

The chapter aims to focus on the concept of micropigmentation, which reflects the medical application of tattooing. Tattooing is the art of inserting metabolically inert pigments in a desired pattern and at the optimum level into the skin. The process is performed using manual or electrically driven needles, whereby the pigment that is deposited beyond the epidermis is taken up by the dermal macrophages and fibroblasts where it resides permanently, resulting in the desired change in color and pattern on the skin. The chapter covers basic principles, pigments used, instruments, indications, contraindications, preprocedure, procedure steps, postprocedure care, adverse effects, complications, etc.
