Abstract

A variety of cysts and tumors requires excision for cosmetic as well as medical reasons, and also for correct histopathological diagnosis. The chapter highlights simple and easy to perform procedures of excision, with tips and tricks for each method. Junctional nevi, pyogenic granulomas, milia, sebaceous cysts, lipomas and a variety of smaller benign tumors and cysts can be removed by simple elliptical excision. Modified techniques can be employed in certain special situations. Dog ears are the standing cone deformities or one sided extra mound of redundant tissue, which is seen after the excision and repair of certain skin lesions. All basal cell carcinomas need excision to avoid recurrence. Sebaceous cyst or epidermoid cyst is a benign swelling with punctum on the surface occurring because of rupture of the pilosebaceous follicle. Lipomas are common benign soft-tissue neoplasms composed of fat cells. Steatocystoma multiplex is an uncommon benign cutaneous disorder. A corn or clavus is an area of well-circumscribed hyperkeratosis of the skin with a central, and often painful, keratin core which pains on vertical pressure.
