Abstract

The concept of refractive lenticule extraction (ReLEx) heralded a landmark shift in the concept of refractive surgery from the conventional two-step flap-based corneal ablative procedures to a single-step femtosecond laser procedure. This chapter covers the basic principle of the machine, understanding the machine, understanding the laser parameters, and maintenance of the machine and set-up conditions. The VisuMax femtosecond laser system (Carl Zeiss Meditec, Jena, Germany) is the only laser platform approved for the creation of an intrastromal refractive lenticule. Treatment planning involves accurate entry of the treatment data which includes the lenticule and the cap parameters. Lenticule dimensions mainly depend on the manifest refraction, optical zone (OZ) diameter, transition zone (TZ) and minimum lenticule thickness predefined. All these parameters need to be entered while planning the treatment.
