Abstract

Personality is the pattern of enduring characteristics that produce consistency and individuality in a given person. It encompasses the behaviors that make each of us unique and that differentiate us from others. Types of personality, factors influencing personality, theories of personality development, psychodynamic approaches to personality, psychometric assessment of personality, alterations in personality, and personality and nursing are covered in this chapter. Personality type refers to the psychological classification of different kinds of individuals. These are different from personality traits. Personality types explain the qualitative differences between people whereas personality traits might be the quantitative differences. Developmental theories make out specific behaviors associated with various stages specifying its appropriateness. The major theoretical approaches of personality include psychodynamic approaches to personality, lifespan approach, trait approaches, humanistic approaches, behavioral and social learning approaches, and biological and evolutionary approaches, which are briefly explained in this chapter. In this chapter, short essay type questions and multiple choice questions along with their answer key are also provided.
