Abstract

This chapter describes the role of progestins in combined hormonal contraception. Hormonal contraceptives are female sex steroids, synthetic estrogens and synthetic progestins. These can be administered in the form of oral contraceptive pills (OCPs), patches, injectables and vaginal rings. The most commonly used hormonal contraceptive is the combination OCPs containing estrogens and progestins. Combined OCPs can be monophasic and multiphasic. This chapter covers the mechanism of action of oral contraceptive pills, combined hormonal oral methods, combined hormonal non-oral methods, combined contraceptive vaginal rings, and combined injectable contraceptives.
