Abstract

The chemical name of progesterone is pregn-4-ene-3,20-dione. It belongs to a group of steroid hormones called the progestogens and is the major progestogen in the body. Progesterone is also a crucial metabolic intermediate in the production of other endogenous steroids including the sex hormones and corticosteroids and plays an important role in brain function as a neurosteroid. Progesterone occurs as a white or creamy white, crystalline powder. It is odorless and is stable in air. Practically insoluble in water, it is soluble in alcohol, acetone, and dioxane and sparingly soluble in vegetable oils. Structural formula of pregn-4-ene-3,20-dione are also given in this chapter.
