Abstract

Micronization process by decreasing the particle size enables rapid absorption and dissolution resulting in increased bioavailability of the drug. Coating the drug with lipid (progesterone is packed in peanut oil) and dispensing it in a gelatin capsule enhances its lymphatic absorption and further increases its bioavailability. With all this, there is a predictable increase in serum progesterone concentration in a dose-dependent manner. Indications for its use include luteal phase defects (LPD), progesterone challenge test (PCT), hormone replacement therapy (HRT), endometrial protection in abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB), premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and preterm labor (PTL).
