Abstract

Pharmacologic effects of progestins that are clinically significant are suppression of hypothalamic-pituitary axis, effects on endometrium, effects on myometrium, effects on lipid metabolism, androgenic actions, effects on carbohydrate metabolism, effects on hemostatic factors, effects on nervous system, and effects on bones. The preovulatory surge of gonadotropins is suppressed at the level of hypothalamus and pituitary, thus forming the basis of their contraceptive use. Progestogens have been found to have effects on cognitive functions, mood, feeling of well-being and on dementia of Alzheimer’s disease.
