Abstract

This chapter gives the description on individual progestogen. This chapter covers the dydrogesterone, esters of progesterone, depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA), estranes (19-nortestosterone derivatives), gonanes, and newer progestins. Estranes are derived from 19-nortestosterone, the parent compound used in oral contraceptives. They are characterized by the presence of an ethinyl group at position 17α and by the absence of methyl group between A-B rings. Most of the estrane progestogens resembling norethindrone or norethisterone are converted to more potent compounds as norethynodrel (isomer) and others.
