Abstract

The chapter discusses about the temporomandibular joint which is unique in its anatomy, histology and function. Though, anatomically, there are two joints, a right and a left, yet functionally the joints act as one unit. The temporomandibular joint is like atlanxo-occipital joint which is bilateral anatomically but acts as one unit functionally. Its components are mandibular condyle, articular disc, synovial cavities, mandibular fossa, and articular capsule. The temporomandibular joint is a bilateral ginglymoarthrodial or sliding hinge joint. The chapter also discusses about the blood supply, nerve supply, and different types of movements. To test one’s learning, some expected theory and viva questions are also given at the end of the chapter.
