Abstract

The chapter talks about the analgesics, which are the drugs that relieve pain without producing unconsciousness. Analgesics may act centrally (selective depressant effect on the central nervous system) or may act peripherally due to a direct effect on pain receptors. It can be classified as opioid analgesics and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Features of opioids include more potent, useful in severe visceral pain, high abuse potential, euphoric feeling after intake, and causes respiratory depression. Morphine, pethidine, and pentazocine are the opioids. NSAIDs are commonly used, cannot be used for severe pain, safer analgesics, anti-inflammatory, and antipyretic. NSAIDs are further classified as nonselective cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitors and selective COX-2 inhibitors. Nonselective COX-2 inhibitors include aspirin, paracetamol, piroxicam, ibuprofen, diclofenac, and indomethacin. Newer nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are ketoprofen and ketorolac.
