Abstract

The chapter describes an overview on oral malignancies. Tumor is simply a swelling of the tissue. In the strict sense, the word does not imply a neoplastic process. A neoplasm is often considered as an independent, uncoordinated new growth of tissue which is potentially capable of unlimited proliferation and which does not regress after removal of the stimulus which produced the lesion. Tumors can be benign or malignant. Malignant tumors can be broadly categorized into two types, namely carcinoma (cancer) which is a malignant tumor of epithelial origin, and sarcoma which is a malignant tumor arising from mesenchyme or its derivatives. Oral cancer is a type of tumor that arises from the oral epithelium. Management of oral cancer is described as surgical and medical (radiation and chemotherapy).
