Abstract

The chapter describes in brief the cranial nerves, including trigeminal nerve and facial nerve. The trigeminal nerve is the major sensory nerve of the face. It has three major divisions—one that convey general somatic sensation, touch, pain, and proprioception from the face; mucosa; and supply muscles of mastication. Facial nerve provides innervation to the muscle of facial expression and parasympathetic motor innervations to most of the salivary glands and taste buds of the oral cavity. The facial nerve leaves the cranial cavity by way of the internal acoustic meatus and follows the facial canal to emerge at the stylomastoid foramen, where it gives off branches to the stylohyoid muscle and digastricus.
