Abstract

The chapter deals with muscles of mastication. The muscles which are required for mastication (chewing) are known as the muscles of mastication. These muscles help in moving the mandible and not the maxilla as the maxilla is a fixed bone. Temporalis muscle is a fan-shaped muscle. It is present on the side of the head at the temple region. Lateral pterygoid or external pterygoid muscle is a thick and triangular muscle of mastication that occupies primarily a horizontal position. Medial pterygoid or internal pterygoid muscle is almost a mirror image of the master muscle. It is rhomboidal and runs practically in the same direction on the inner surface of the ramus of mandible.
