Abstract

Invasive prenatal testing remains a mainstay of obstetric practice in the United States. When provided within a framework of nondirective genetic counseling and supportive follow-up, invasive testing can provide critical information to women and couples concerning pregnancy outcomes. The development of diagnostic ultrasound has opened the field of invasive ultrasound-guided procedures with numerable applications. The free-hand, two-operator, end-on technique is preferred. Local anesthetic is used in complex procedures but not in routine procedures. Prophylactic antibiotics are used only in high-risk situations. Developing skills and technique with simulators will be helpful to gain confidence. The most important aspect of all invasive procedures is experience and teamwork between operator and sonologist.
