Abstract

The technique of chorionic villous sampling (CVS) was first described as a means of first-trimester sex-chromosome determination in China. Chorionic villous sampling is now a well-established procedure in prenatal diagnosis. The chorionic villi have same genetic constitution as that of the fetus and therefore reflects chromosomal, biochemical and DNA configuration of the fetus. CVS enables early, first trimester prenatal diagnosis and is a suitable alternative to amniocentesis. This chapter discusses the standard techniques of CVS, both transabdominal and transcervical, as well as its safety and efficacy. The transabdominal route has become the technique of choice by the nonobstetrician operators, as it suits them both, the operator and the women. This route is counseled by them, has a lower rate of immediate complications, a lower risk of intrauterine infection and a shorter learning curve.
