Salivary glands are divided into two groups as major and minor glands. There are three pairs of major salivary glands, namely parotid, submandibular and sublingual. Parotid gland is located in the retromandibular fossa in an area anterior and inferior to external auditory canal. Sublingual gland is located just beneath mucosa of floor of mouth. Submandibular gland is located in the digastric triangle. Diseases of salivary glands like mucous retention cyst and ranula, inflammatory disorders like submandibular sialadenitis, acute parotitis, granulomatous sialadenitis, recurrent parotitis of childhood, human immunodeficiency virus-associated sialadenitis, sialadenosis, etc., and parotid gland tumors like pleomorphic adenoma, Warthin’s tumor, acinic cell tumor, etc. are discussed. Salivary gland tumors comprise 3% of all head and neck tumors. Majority of these tumors occur in major salivary glands, most commonly in parotid gland.
