Abstract

The chapter gives a brief insight into the concept of fractures, with special emphasis to maxillofacial fractures. Fracture is the structural break in normal continuity of bone. A fracture is called as simple or closed when there is no communication between site of fracture and exterior of body. A fracture is called compound or open when there is a wound on the skin surface leading down to the site of fracture. They are classified as traumatic fracture, stress fracture, pathological fracture, transverse fracture, spiral fracture, comminuted fracture, compression fracture, avulsion fracture, and greenstick fracture. As soon as the bone breaks, the fracture begins to heal. Clinical features, diagnosis, management, newer methods of fracture treatment, and complications of fractures are described. Other important topics that are covered in this chapter are fractures of head and neck region, maxillofacial fractures, fracture of the mandible, fracture of the maxilla, orbital blow-out fracture, and complications of maxillofacial fractures.
