Abstract

Burn is an injury or damage caused by heat or sources producing heat leading to coagulation necrosis. Various causes of burns are dry heat, wet heat, electric burns, chemical burns, and irradiation. On clinical examination, there are first-degree, second-degree, and third-degree burns. Clinical assessment of depth of burn wound and pathophysiology of burns are given in box format. Hypertrophic scars, electric injuries, and chemical burns are discussed. Tissue replacement is usually done to cover a wound or tissue defect by means of tissue transfer. It is done in two ways skin grafting and flap. Skin substitutes are natural, synthetic or biosynthetic material that is used to cover large wounds, in patients with inadequate skin donor sites. Tissue expansion is a technique that uses local tissue for reconstruction.
